International Development in Missiological Perspective
November 4-5, 2011, Maryknoll Mission Institute
"International Development in Missiological Perspective" is the theme of the American Society of Missiology Eastern Fellowship annual meeting, November 4-5, 2011, at Maryknoll Mission Institute, Ossining, New York.
Presenters and attendees will examine the "growing awareness and the importance of 'religion and development' by the World Bank, the World Faiths Development Dialogue, and other such organizations," said ASM East president Benjamin L. Hartley, associate professor of Christian mission, Palmer Theological Seminary, Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, bhartley@eastern.edu
Explaining the theme, he cited a recent "shift in North American Christian mission organizations (that) have become increasingly involved in international development efforts" and noted that Christian colleges, graduate schools, and seminaries have responded to this trend by offering more coursework in development studies than they previously offered. Conference speakers include David Bronkema, director of international development and associate professor of international development, Eastern University, St. David's, Pennsylvania; and Elizabeth Parsons, lecturer in religion and development and co-director of contextual education, Boston University School of Theology, Boston, Massachusetts.
